Custom Die Cut Stickers: Everything You Need to Know Before Ordering

By Jokey Stickers August 12th, 2026 79 views
What are die cut stickers, how much do they cost, and which material should you choose? A factory-direct guide covering formats, pricing, design rules, and where to use them.

What Are Die Cut Stickers (And Why They're Everywhere)

Look at any laptop in a coffee shop. Flip over a premium product box. Open a subscription package. The stickers you see — the ones cut exactly to the outline of their design, no white square border, no wasted space — those are custom die cut stickers.

Here's the definition in plain English: a die cut sticker is printed, then cut all the way through both the sticker material and the backing paper, following the exact outline of your design. Your logo is a circle? The sticker is a circle. Your mascot is a raccoon? The sticker is a raccoon. The shape of the sticker IS the shape of your artwork — nothing more, nothing less.

That's why die cut stickers have become the default choice for brands, creators, and small businesses. They look intentional. They look like you invested in your identity. And they cost surprisingly little in bulk.

But before you order your first batch, there are a few things worth understanding — materials, durability, pricing, design rules, and the mistakes that cause reprints. This guide walks through all of it, based on what we see every day on our factory floor after 24 years of printing custom stickers.

Jokeystickers fact: We manufacture custom die cut stickers in-house — printing, cutting, and packaging under one roof. That's how we keep prices factory-direct and quality consistent across every order.

Die Cut vs Kiss Cut vs Sticker Sheets: The Differences That Matter

"Die cut" is one of three common formats, and they're often confused. Here's the distinction that matters when you order.

Custom die cut sticker vs kiss cut sticker sheet comparison
A die cut sticker peels off as a single shape; a kiss cut sheet keeps multiple stickers on one backing.

Die Cut Stickers

Kiss Cut Stickers

Materials for Die Cut Stickers: What Lasts and What Doesn't

A die cut sticker is only as good as the material it's printed on. Pick wrong and your stickers fade, peel, or crack within weeks. Here's what we recommend from the production line.

Vinyl — the all-rounder

Vinyl is the workhorse. Waterproof, UV-resistant, flexible, and durable enough for outdoor use with lamination. Explore vinyl stickers →

  • Best for: laptop stickers, outdoor signs, bottle labels, car decals, anything that faces weather or handling
  • Lifespan outdoors: 3–5+ years with glossy or matte lamination
  • Cost: $0.10–$0.35 per sticker in bulk depending on size

Paper — the budget option

Paper die cut stickers have a nice matte, natural feel and a low price tag — but they don't survive moisture.

  • Best for: indoor packaging, envelopes, short-term promotions
  • Lifespan: 6–12 months indoors
  • Cost: $0.05–$0.18 per sticker in bulk

Specialty materials — when you want to stand out

Material Why brands choose it
Holographic Rainbow shimmer that catches light and eyes
Transparent Invisible background — design floats on the surface
Foil (gold/silver) Premium metallic finish for luxury packaging
Glitter Textured sparkle for cosmetics and kids' products

How Much Do Custom Die Cut Stickers Cost?

Pricing for die cut stickers comes down to four variables. Once you understand them, quotes stop feeling random.

1. Quantity — the biggest lever

Setup costs (file prep, machine calibration, cutting dies) are fixed. The more stickers you order, the lower the per-unit price:

  • 100 stickers: ~$0.45/sticker
  • 500 stickers: ~$0.22/sticker
  • 1,000 stickers: ~$0.14/sticker
  • 5,000 stickers: ~$0.07/sticker

If you'll use stickers again within a year, order more upfront — the marginal cost is far less than doubling your budget later.

2. Size

Pricing scales with material area. A 4"×4" sticker uses four times the material of a 2"×2" sticker.

3. Material and lamination

Paper is cheapest, vinyl mid-range, specialty materials (holographic, foil) most expensive. Glossy or matte lamination adds a small per-sticker cost but multiplies lifespan.

4. Cutting complexity

A circle or rectangle is cheap to cut. Intricate shapes with thin arms, tight corners, or small interior details cost more — they need a custom die and slower cutting.

A note on factory-direct pricing: many sticker websites are resellers who add 40–100% markup. Buying factory-direct means your budget buys more stickers. See why factory-direct matters →

Design Rules for Die Cut Stickers (From Our Factory Floor)

90% of the problems we see arrive in the design file, not the printing. Follow these rules and your first batch will look exactly like you imagined.

The six rules that prevent reprints

  • CMYK, not RGB. Screens show light; printers use ink. Design in CMYK to avoid color shifts.
  • 300 DPI minimum. Pixels ÷ 300 = maximum print size in inches. A 3000px design prints up to 10 inches.
  • Add bleed. Extend your background 1/8 inch past the cut line so no white slivers appear at the edge.
  • Keep a safe zone. Keep text and logos 1/8 inch inside the cut line.
  • Mind thin lines. At sticker size, 6pt text and 1pt lines are about the minimum. Thinner elements get lost in the cut.
  • Convert fonts to outlines. In Illustrator: Type → Create Outlines. Guarantees your type prints correctly.

Need more detail? Our artwork guidelines cover every file requirement, and we check artwork free before production — if something's off, we'll tell you before you pay for a reprint.
